Name: Toussaint L' overture "the black napoleon"
Role: Former slave who was inspired by french revolutionary ideology and angered by years of abuse at the hands of the white planters. Became a dominant political and military leader during the Haitian revolution by joining the slave insurgency.
Name: The planters
Role: The wealthy white that owned plantations and slaves. Were disenchanted with the french and wanted to be independent, they also violated a lot of french law by illegally trading.
Name: Petit Blancs
Role: Another group of whites with less power than planters, they worked middle and underclass jobs and were often not as wealthy as the free people of color or planters.
Name: The free people of color
Role: About half of the free people of color were mixed, children of white Frenchman and slaves. The other half were slaves who purchased their freedom or were granted freedom by their master for whatever reason. They were most often wealthy and wealthier than the petit blancs, thus causing hatred from the petit blancs. Despite this, the free people of color had hatred for the slaves and often distance themselves from their roots.
Name: The slaves
Role: There were over 500, 000 slaves, they outnumbered the free people 10: 1. They were split up into three groups. The domestic slaves, who worked inside as cooks and personal servants. The field slaves, who worked in the plantations. Lastly, the maroons, a group of runaway slaves who lived in remote parts and did subsistence farming.
